Üsküdar and Maiden's Tower: an afternoon on the Asian shore

Üsküdar is a satisfying change of scene when you have spent the morning among the old city’s ticket queues. The ferry trip gives you the skyline from the water, and the waterfront lets you look back across the Bosphorus with no need to hurry toward another monument. Maiden’s Tower can be part of that afternoon, but you do not have to visit the islet to enjoy the view.

Start with the crossing

Use Şehir Hatları’s current timetables to choose a ferry to Üsküdar from the pier that suits your day. Check both the departure pier and destination rather than boarding a boat simply because it is heading toward the other shore.

The crossing is ordinary public transport, not automatically a sightseeing cruise. That is part of its appeal. Find a seat, take in the changing skyline and have your belongings ready before arrival so you can leave the gangway without stopping in everyone’s way. For wet or windy weather, an inside seat can be much more comfortable than insisting on staying outside.

Walk toward Salacak

From the central waterfront, head toward Salacak for views of Maiden’s Tower and the historic peninsula beyond. Keep the walk flexible: pause where there is space to sit, stop for a drink and enjoy the way the city changes as you move along the shore.

This is not a remote escape from Istanbul. You are still in a busy urban district, with traffic, commuters and several different waterfront access points. Use crossings where provided and do not let a photograph pull you into the road. A breeze off the water can make the temperature feel different from sheltered streets, so a light extra layer is useful outside high summer.

Visit the tower or stay on shore?

Maiden’s Tower, Kız Kulesi in Turkish, stands on a small islet off Üsküdar. It has served several purposes over its long history and now functions as a monument museum. Üsküdar municipality’s introduction provides the local historical context.

Go over if you are interested in the tower itself, the short boat journey and looking back toward both shores. Stay on the promenade if your main aim is the classic view of the tower in the water. A shore walk is a complete outing in its own right, not a failed version of the paid visit.

The stories of a princess, a prophecy and a snake belong to the tower’s legends. They are part of its cultural appeal, but should not be mistaken for a documented account of why the structure was built.

Use the current departure points

The ministry’s Maiden’s Tower listing currently lists boats from Salacak on Harem Sahil Yolu and from Karaköy beside Ziraat Bank. Older pages may mention a different European-side departure, so use the actual current timetable and ticket-office directions.

Check whether the price you are looking at includes transport as well as admission. Verify the return boat before boarding, and leave space in your schedule for changes caused by weather. A boat departure time is not the same thing as the museum’s closing time.

For a relaxed plan, allow an afternoon for the crossing, shore walk and a meal; add the tower only if its sailing times fit comfortably. Finish back near the Üsküdar piers or return by Marmaray. If you want food markets and more evening streets instead, Kadıköy is a different Asian-side outing worth giving its own time.
